Photo — for real photos, portraits, and shaded artwork with actual light-to-dark gradients. Flat black-and-white art won't sculpt well with this.

How should height be generated from your artwork?

Photo — height comes from the image's own brightness, smoothed into a clean sculpted look like professional depth-map tools (DepthR, SculptOK) — broad shading, not literal source grain.

Defaults now favor reproducing fine source texture/relief (matches pre-shaded AI mockups and dense engraved-look art). If a real photo looks grainy/noisy instead of sculpted, raise Denoise (and lower Detail Strength) to fall back to a smoother, DepthR/SculptOK-style look.
Invert (dark areas raised)
Isolate subjectCut the shape out using Shape Detection above; background stays flat. Off by default for Photo — most photos/illustrations fill the whole frame, and the auto light/dark guess can flatten the actual subject if it backfires.
Blend
Broad volume comes from the dome; photo detail rides on top of it, tapering to nothing at the silhouette edge.
AI Depth (Cloud)
Sends your image to a real AI depth-estimation model for photorealistic, anatomy-aware depth — closer to DepthR/SculptOK than the engines above. Also available from Auto Prep's "Use AI Depth" toggle for Photo/Portrait artwork.
Invert AI depthOn by default to match Depth2Beam's convention. Turn off only if a result looks reversed.

Relief Output

Set overall depth and how it engraves.

Darker = deeper engrave, lighter = shallower burn — the standard convention for laser depth maps.
Raised ReliefLight artwork remains high while the laser removes the darker background around it.
Sink into background (intaglio)Off: subject stays shallow/proud, background cut deep. On: subject cut deep into an untouched background.

Physical Stacked Relief

Split the relief into posterized vector cut-layers instead of one grayscale engrave — cut each from plywood, cardstock, or acrylic and physically stack them for a 3D relief. Use Preview Stacked Layers above to see the assembled result before cutting anything.

Grows each layer's cut path outward — and shrinks any interior holes — by half this amount, to counteract the material your laser removes along the cut line. Set to your laser/material's known kerf width (commonly 0.1–0.3mm); leave at 0 to cut exactly on the traced line.

Layered Laser Engraving Beta

This beta workflow builds one LightBurn project with a separate, non-overlapping image layer for every depth band. Review all machine settings in LightBurn and run a material test before engraving.

This count is independent from the Physical Stacked Relief console above.

Height Map uses darker pixels for deeper engraving and lighter pixels for shallower engraving. Complete Job Package includes outputs from both independent layer consoles.
