Best ForNew to depth maps — pick your artwork type and let us build the relief for you.

Mixed — for artwork that blends flat graphic elements with some shading. Real photos aren't supported here; use Logo / Crest for flat vector-style art, or generate artwork from a prompt with the Relief Generator below.
Raised Relief — recommended. The subject stands above the background. Best for coins, medallions, and plaques.
Drop an image in the preview area, then press Generate.

Manual Workflow

Drop an image in the preview area above, then step through each stage yourself for full control over the relief. Steps unlock in order as you go.

1

Choose Relief Style

How should height be generated from your artwork?

›
Blended — the dome supplies broad volume, tonal detail from your artwork rides on top and tapers off at the edges. Good for turning flat line art into a coin-style dome with texture.
2

Refine Detail

Fine-tune how the relief is built from your artwork.

›
Shape Detection
Samples this image's own corners to set Background mode/Threshold/Invert — use this instead of guessing a threshold by eye, especially on light or high-key backgrounds.
Invert mask
Dome Shape
Luminance Relief
Defaults now favor reproducing fine source texture/relief (matches pre-shaded AI mockups and dense engraved-look art). If your source image looks grainy/noisy instead of sculpted, raise Denoise (and lower Detail Strength) to fall back to a smoother, DepthR/SculptOK-style look.
Invert (dark areas raised)
Flatten wide lighting gradientStrips out a slow, whole-image brightness trend before luminance becomes height — the kind of uneven "lit from one side" render an AI-generated relief can carry, which otherwise reads as one edge of the disc sitting genuinely taller than the other. Leaves real local shading/texture (cracks, muscle contours, engraved detail) untouched. Off by default: a real logo's own intentional gradient fill is legitimate height information, not a defect to remove. Turn on if a background or rim that should sit flat instead looks tilted in Height Map view.
Isolate subjectCuts the subject out via Shape Detection; background (or, for AI Depth/Portrait, the depth behind the subject) flattens to zero instead of keeping its natural gradient. Threshold auto-sets from the image's own border ring — off by default since most source images fill the frame.
Blend
Broad volume comes from the dome; tonal detail from your artwork rides on top of it, tapering to nothing at the silhouette edge.
AI Depth + Detail
Depth comes from the AI depth map, so the background genuinely recesses; the artwork's fine surface texture is added on top. Generate an AI Depth map first — this engine needs one. Denoise (above) softens the surface this reads; Detail strength does not apply here — use Surface detail below instead (V1.83: Detail strength double-counted with Surface detail and crushed fine detail like carved lettering to flat black).
AI Depth (Cloud)
Estimates relative depth from your image. This panel now only appears after a Relief Generator (Create mode) run with AI Depth refinement on — it's no longer a manually-selectable engine, since real photo/portrait uploads aren't supported. Uses 1 AI credit per generation (the Relief Generator's text-to-image mode uses 5 — 4 for the generation plus 1 for the automatic AI Depth refinement pass it now runs — same shared allowance).
Advanced: Invert AI depthTroubleshooting only. Leave off normally; enable only if the generated 3D preview is reversed.
When the service supplies 16-bit depth, the app preserves that precision. This control only smooths the Lit Relief preview's raking-light shading calculation, which can still show faint contour-ring banding at higher working resolutions purely from the lighting math itself. It never touches the exported height map, STL, or any other preview mode. Raise it if you still see rings; 0 shows the raw unsmoothed data.
AI allowance: available after image upload.
Not generated yet.
Detects real ridge/crease lines from your image's own shading and carves them into the depth, plus a broader contrast pass. Applies evenly across the whole subject. Free (no AI credit); works after any AI Depth generation. Takes under a second.
0 restores the unenhanced AI depth. Free to edit; recomputes locally, no AI call.
Generate AI Depth first.

Relief Output

Set overall depth and how it engraves.

›
Darker = deeper engrave, lighter = shallower burn — the standard convention for laser depth maps.
Raised ReliefLight artwork remains high while the laser removes the darker background around it.

Box smooths everything equally — softening real edges along with noise. Edge-Aware only smooths flat/banded areas and leaves sharp artwork edges alone; it's heavier to compute, so on large images or high radius values it can take a few seconds to update after you stop dragging.

Sink into background (intaglio)Off: subject stays shallow/proud, background cut deep. On: subject cut deep into an untouched background.

Panel Shape

Optional — crop to a coin, coaster, or other panel shape and add a raised bezel.

›
Only affects sized presets above (Coin/coaster) — "Standard/Thin/Wide" and "Original Flat Panel" keep the source resolution as before. Match this to the laser that actually engraves the physical piece, not just "higher is better": a laser's spot size caps how much detail it can resolve (DPI ≈ 25.4 ÷ spot size in mm) — CO2/diode typically resolve ~150-300 DPI, while a fiber laser marking a metal blank can resolve far finer, so 500-600+ DPI is the better match if that's how these get made. Changing this re-locks the current size at the new resolution.

Export

Download your laser-ready height map.

›
Exporting Raised ReliefThe laser removes the dark background and leaves the light artwork raised.

Physical Stacked Relief

Split the relief into posterized vector cut-layers instead of one grayscale engrave — cut each from plywood, cardstock, or acrylic and physically stack them for a 3D relief. Use Preview Stacked Layers above to see the assembled result before cutting anything.

Grows each layer's cut path outward — and shrinks any interior holes — by half this amount, to counteract the material your laser removes along the cut line. Set to your laser/material's known kerf width (commonly 0.1–0.3mm); leave at 0 to cut exactly on the traced line.

Layered Laser Engraving Beta

This beta workflow builds one LightBurn project with a separate, non-overlapping image layer for every depth band. Review all machine settings in LightBurn and run a material test before engraving.

This count is independent from the Physical Stacked Relief console above.

Choose your machine and material, then apply the profile. These are starting values—not guaranteed production settings.

Layered engraving exports only

Standard Export FULL SQUARE FRAME

These files describe the overall relief or preserve the complete project, at the full canvas size — always the complete square/rectangle, even if a Panel Shape crop is active below. They do not belong exclusively to either layer console. Use these for the everyday case: sending a relief straight to your own laser.

Height Map uses darker pixels for deeper engraving and lighter pixels for shallower engraving. Use the 16-bit PNG instead of the standard Height Map when your CNC/CAM software or downstream tool reads 16-bit grayscale — most laser software (including LightBurn) expects the standard 8-bit version. Complete Job Package includes outputs from both independent layer consoles.

Coin / Shaped Panel Export CROPPED TO SHAPE

These crop to whatever panel shape is active in Panel Shape above (a sized coin, a coaster, or a custom rim) — everything outside that edge is genuinely removed from the file instead of staying baked in as background. Use these when the height map itself is what you're sharing or selling as a standalone image, not just sending straight to your own laser.
